I heard your heartbeat, soft and low

Mine was fast, yours was slow

Fascinated, though asleep,

I lay there, listening,

Tears of joy glistening.

I felt your heartbeat, next to mine,

How could that be,  I wondered,

Next to me, at last, I pondered,

Extra heartbeats, from your heart,

Now we'll never be apart.

I was awake, I knew 'twas real

My chest expanded,  and I could feel

Two hearts, beating,  side by side,

Your heart beating deep inside. 

Now, no more doubt, gives way to fear,

For I know you are always near,

Always with me, night and day,

Only a heartbeat, a heartbeat away.
